A.1. UPPER KRISHNA PROJECT STAGE – 1

1.          BRIEF DESCRIPTION

1.1.  The Upper Krishna Project, across the river Krishna, provides for irrigation to the drought prone areas of Bijapur, Bagalkote, Gulbarga, Raichur and Koppal Districts.  

1.2.  This project has been taken up in stages, as detailed below:  

STAGE-1

                     The I-Stage, of the Project comprises of the following:-  

  a)  Dam across the river Krishna, near Almatti village in Bagewadi taluk of Bijapur district with a rigid crest level   of 509.02 M (1670.00ft) and radial type crest gates of size 15.00 M x 15.24 M for storing water upto R L 512.20 M (1680 ft) for providing irrigation to an extent of 0.16 lakh ha. and 

 b)      Another dam across the river Krishna, at Narayanapur (downstream of Almatti Dam) near Bachihal and    Siddapur village in Muddebihal taluk of Bijapur district.  A Left Bank Canal from it for providing irrigation under I-Stage for 4.25 lakh ha. and the utilisation will be 3368 M.cum (119 TMC).

                STAGE – II

          The II-Stage of the project envisages the raising of FRL of Almatti Dam to 524.26 M (1720 ft) to utilise  further quantum of 1907 Mcum (54 TMC) for providing irrigation to an additional extent of 1.972 lakh ha.

 1.3  The I-Stage of the project is itself taken up in phases, as indicated below:

                   A)                PHASE (1)

The first phase of the project, executed mainly with financial assistance from the World Bank, comprises of the following:  

  a)          Construction of Almatti Dam, with spillway upto a partial height.  
   b)          Construction of Narayanapur dam and allied works.
  c)          Construction of Narayanapur Left Bank Canal from 35.50 Km. upto 78 Km (the portion of the canal   upto  35.5 Km was taken up without assistance from World Bank). 
  d)          Construction of the Sahahapur Branch of the Narayanapur Left Bank Canal, over entire length of 76 km. 
 e)          Creation of an irrigation potential of 79,629 ha. and
 f)            Creation of the balance potential of the first phase (25,371 Ha) without World Bank Assistance.

 B)                PHASE (2)

        The Second phase of the project, which was taken up under World Bank assistance, comprises of the following: 
                  a)        Raising of the Crest of Almatti dam to RL 509.02 M (1,670.00 ft) and construction of piers and road     bridges. 
                  b)       Construction of part length of Indi Branch and partial distribution system under Mudbal Branch, to provide irrigation to an extent of 1.70 lakh ha.

                   C)        PHASE (3)     

              The third phase envisages completion of all the balance works of the I-stage of the project, for providing irrigation to a further extent of 1.5 lakh ha.

      1.4. WORLD BANK ASSISTANCE

              1.4.1. The first phase of the project has been implemented, with World Bank Assistance to the tune of  $ 117.65 million (U.S) and the credit is fully utilised.

              1.4.2. The second phase of the project, estimated to cost Rs. 1552.30 Crores was taken up with the financial        assistance from the World Bank during 1988 and the assistance extended by the Bank is 160 million dollars  (U.S) in the form of credit and 165 million dollars (U.S) in the form of loan.  The loan was reduced from 165million US dollar to 45 million US dollars, due to appreciation of dollar value.  World Bank Assistance was closed during 1997 and balance works have been completed out of State funds.

2.  DAM AND CANALS        

2.1.         DAM

2.1.1.      The composite Dam at Almatti which is 1564.83 M in length and 52.25 M in height with a gross storage capacity of 42.19 TMC will submerge an area of 24230 ha. affecting 136 villages and a population of 1,80,000.

2.1.2.      The Composite Dam at Narayanapur which is 10637.52 M. length and 29.72 M in height with a gross storage capacity of 37.865 TMC has submerged an extent of 13.206 ha. affecting 41 villages and a population of 48,125.

2.2.         CANALS  

Almatti Left Bank Canal which is 103 km. long with provide irrigation to 16,200 ha.

 Narayanapur Left Bank Canal which is 78 km long with its four branches viz. Shahapur, Indi, Mudbal Jewargi Branch Canals will provide irrigation to 408747 Ha.

2.3.         COST

The I-Stage of the project has been originally estimated to cost Rs. 283.65 Crores at 1975-76 level of rates.  The present cost of the I-Stage is Rs. 3465.77 crores.

2.4.         POWER

Power Generation at Almatti dam with 5 units having a total installed capacity of 297 MW is also a part of the project.
